Dr. Suman Sharma started learning Sitar at the tender age of
ten. She started playing in music festivals
in India and won several awards. Her talent was further polished under
the tutelage of
Ms. Kamlesh Mathur and Sh. Balwant Rai Verma. She
finally decided to completely devote herself to music and joined
Masters programme in Music at University of Delhi India. There she came
in contact with world renowned
Sitar Maestro Pandit Debu Chaudhuri.
She completed her
Doctorate in Music under his guidance. She
also received fellowship of University Grants Commission (U.G.C.),
awarded by the Government Of India. She also holds
Sangeet Visharad in
Vocal music (a prestigious and renowned training in Classical Music).
In India she performed regularly at music festivals and gave several
performances.
Dr. Suman Sharma has been very active in the US Indian Classical arena.
She had performed at several venues in Washington DC, Virgina and
Maryland. She has been a regular performer at major Universities
through
Spic - Macay. She is a ardent promoter of Indian Classical
Music and Sitar is her devotion. She has given several Lecture
demonstrations and Indian Music appreciation seminars in schools and
universities. She had participated in Washington DC folks art and music
festival and has performed for the
Public Television.
She has the distinction of performing at the prestigious
Kennedy Center
for Performing Arts in Washington DC.
Suman plays sitar effortlessly and
music that flows is flawless. Her renderings of Indian classical Ragas
are enchanting and truly one needs to hear them to believe the magical
beauty that she weaves. She has an
unique style that is flawless,
enchanting and deeply rooted in traditional Indian classical style. She
is also on the approved list of artists of Maharishi University, Iowa
and has performed several times at Maharishi TM centers and the
University in Fairfield Iowa.
She has recorded several music albums both solo and along with other artists.
Melody of joy and

are two of her's most popular music albums.
She has also written a book
Know Indian Songs
which is unique as it presents some of the most popular songs and prayers from India in western notations.
Thus opening doors for people trained in Western music to learn and play traditional Indian music.
She is not only an accomplished sitarist but a devoted teacher as well.
She teaches sitar and several of her students have won accolades at
music festivals and competitions. She is a renowned Sitar teacher in
tristate area (DC-VA-MD). She also hold sitar workshops at Maharishi
University Iowa.
